What is an IOP?
An intensive outpatient program provides structured, consistent support on an outpatient basis. Individuals in an IOP come to a treatment center multiple times a week to participate in treatment sessions and then return home after their sessions end. This level of care is considered a step down from more rigorous outpatient treatment programs such as a partial hospitalization program (PHP) as well as from residential treatment programs, which require individuals to stay at a treatment center for the duration of their program. An IOP is considered a step above a traditional outpatient program, which meets less frequently.

Who Is an IOP For?
Positioned below the intensity of residential treatment and above the flexibility of traditional outpatient care, an IOP provides consistent support with greater independence. While some may transition to an IOP after completing a higher level of care, others may begin their recovery journeys with an IOP, depending on their recovery needs, substance use history, and other factors.
At Prosperity Wellness Center, we work with each patient to better understand their treatment needs and which type of program would best serve their recovery goals. Here are some elements that may indicate that an IOP could be the right choice for you:
- You have completed a higher level of care, such as an inpatient program or partial hospitalization program, and are looking to transition to a lower level of care
- You are navigating a less severe addiction and do not require 24/7 care
- You have access to reliable transportation (for in-person care) or access to reliable internet services in a stable environment (for virtual treatment)
- You have a safe, supportive living environment
- You have outside obligations, such as for your work or family, that do not make residential treatment feasible
Our team will help you take a look at the full picture to determine which level of care is best for you. With multiple IOP options available, we can work with you to find the treatment track that supports your recovery needs.

Frequently Asked Questions about IOP Programs in Washington
What’s the difference between a PHP, IOP, and OP?
A partial hospitalization program (PHP), intensive outpatient program (IOP), and outpatient program (OP) are all different types of outpatient treatment programs. The difference lies in the intensity of the program and the amount of time individuals must commit to spending in treatment each week.
A PHP is considered the most intensive, often meeting four to five times a week for a longer time period each session. An IOP typically meets three times a week for several hours at a time, often in the mornings or evenings, making it easier to fit into a work or school schedule. An outpatient program typically meets once or twice a week for shorter sessions, primarily focused on maintaining long-term recovery.
Prosperity Wellness Center offers an IOP and OP.
What is Prosperity Wellness Center’s IOP schedule?
Our IOP meets three times a week for three hours a session for a total of 9 hours of treatment each week. This IOP lasts about 9 weeks. Our IOP is offered both mornings and evenings, and we offer this program both online and in person.
Can you use insurance to pay for an IOP?
Generally, yes. The specifics of your insurance plan and provider will determine what is covered and what must be paid out of pocket. It is best to check with your provider before beginning treatment to be sure of what is covered.
Prosperity Wellness Center accepts Medicaid and Apple Health Care in Washington.
